Wow! I am so excited right now as the Race of Champions draws nearer. The best of the best this year will be named. I am so excited that I'd start sputtering off incomprehensibly if I try to describe to you what the RoC is all about. So here's
Wikipedia's take on the Race of Champions:
"The Race of Champions is an international motorsport event held at the end of each year, featuring national teams consisting of racing and rally drivers. The race was organized in 1988 by Michèle Mouton and Fredrik Johnson. Originally it was organized in memory of Henri Toivonen and Sergio Cresto. Every year has featured an individual champion, and many have featured other contests. The top individual wins the Henri Toivonen Memorial trophy and given the title, Champion of Champions."
Apart from the singles competition, the RoC also has the Nations Cup where two drivers from different countries try to outdo the rest to proclaim their country the best in the sport.
This year, the elite drivers who made it to the RoC are the following:
- Jenson Button (England)- England's Formula One ace driving for Honda
- Andy Priaulx (England)- Triple and reigning World Car Touring Car champion
- Sebastien Bourdais (France)- Four-time Champ Car champion
- Yvan Muller (France)- World Touring Car Championship standout
- Henning Solberg (Norway)- Five-time Norwegian Rally champion
- Petter Solberg (Norway)- Subaru WRC driver and 2003 World Rally champion
- Marcus Gronholm (Finland)- Two-time World Rally Champion
- Heikki Kovalainen (Finland)- Newly announced McLaren driver
- Tom Kristensen (Scandinavia)- Seven-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner
- Mattias Ekström (Scandinavia)- Two-time DTM Champion
- David Coulthard (Scotland)- Veteran Formula One driver
- Alister McRae (Scotland)- 1995 British Rally Champion; Alister will be driving for his brother Colin who sadly passed away earlier this year in a tragic helicopter accident.
- Jimmie Johnson (United States of America)- Two-time and reigning NASCAR Nextel Cup Series Champion
- Travis Pastrana (United States of America)- Eight-time X-Games champion, the innovator of the double backflip which will blow your mind away.
- Sebastian Vettel (Germany)- Formula One Scuderia Toro Rosso driver
- Michael Schumacher (Germany)- Seven-time Formula One champion and the one everybody wants to beat.
So there you are. Am getting goose bumps just thinking how the race would go. Gotta go now, have to check action on RoC.
